Apply for Admission

Apply for Admission, Schedule a Tour, or Request Information

Thank you for your interest in NIS. Here is a link to the NIS Admissions Portal, where parents may request information, schedule a tour or apply online. Parents will be asked to create a user-name and password for their family. The online portal ensures more efficient communication between the prospective family and various NIS staff involved within the admissions process. Scheduling tours on specific days and times are also possible. Parents may still apply using the traditional paper application forms below, but online inquiries and applications through this portal are preferred.

For those parents who prefer not to inquire or apply online, you may contact the NIS Admissions & Development Office ( to request an admission packet via email, or download the forms below to submit paper applications via postal mail or scanned and sent to the Admissions & Development Office ahead of time via email.

Either way, we encourage parents to contact the school as soon as possible if you wish to consider NIS as an option for their family.

If you have any questions about these documents or the required materials, please do not hesitate to contact the Admissions & Development Office directly.

Explanation of Admissions Materials

We appreciate your cooperation in preparing these documents and submitting a complete admissions application. If you have any questions about these documents or the required materials, please do not hesitate to contact the Admissions & Development Office.

Application Form (Online or Paper)

NIS has one form for applicants entering the ELC Preschool & Kindergarten, and one form for applicants entering into grades 1-12.  The online application is the same as the paper application, but the online application is less expensive since all information must be uploaded digitally. Complete this form in as much detail as possible, one per applicant.

Progress Reports, Grades, Transcripts

Applicants must submit reports from the past two years; if submitting in advance of final reports being available, these reports must be submitted when available.  High School applicants must submit official records in a school-sealed envelope or arrange for them to be sent directly to NIS via postal mail.  The admissions decision may be delayed if documents are not submitted in a timely manner.

Recommendation Forms (ELC or Gr.1-11)

NIS has one recommendation form for ELC preschool and kindergarten applicants and one for elementary, middle and high school applicants.  All applicants should request their current classroom teacher or principal to complete this recommendation form and submit it in a school-sealed envelope together with the application materials.

Student Photo (1)

Submit a 2.5 x 3.5 cm, passport-style photo. This must be taken with a white or light background, and from the shoulders up; this will be used as an ID card for all students from Gr. 4 and above (for mid-year enrollment).

Family Photo (1)

Submit a photo of the family expected to be living with applicant during enrollment; a casual “snap-shot” is acceptable.

Passport Photocopy (or “Juminhyou”)

Photocopy of the applicant’s passport to verify date of birth and nationality.  A photocopy of the Residential Registration is required for residents of Japan.

Application Fee

Payment must be in yen. For applications submitted online through our portal, the 20,000 yen fee can be paid via credit card. For paper applications, the fee costs 30,000 yen and must be made via wire bank-transfer or paid in cash.  The school cannot accept credit cards for paper applications.
