Admissions Policy

Nagoya International School (NIS) serves the educational needs of the bicultural, international and internationally-minded community of Nagoya, Japan. As an inclusive school, NIS enrolls students with diverse gifts, talents and dreams who both benefit from the programs we offer and have the opportunity to achieve the objectives of our mission. 

Consistent with our internationally-minded school community, we believe all students have both the right and the responsibility of global citizenship. NIS celebrates diversity and does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or national and ethnic origin in the administration of its admission policies, educational policies, scholarships, and other school-administered programs.

To enroll, applicants must have an appreciation of our mission and philosophy, and demonstrate the potential to succeed within our English-based curriculum. Equally, parents or guardians of applicants must demonstrate a willingness to work in partnership with the school in support of their child.

While the admissions process at NIS is guided by an inclusive philosophy, the needs of each applicant are considered carefully while also evaluating the ability of the school to deliver equitable access to the mission for all enrolled students. This includes a consideration of the applicant’s readiness to access the curriculum, the extent to which individualized support is available, and the extent to which the applicant’s family is aligned to the mission and philosophy of the school. The final decision to accept or deny an applicant for admissions rests solely with the school’s administration. The school is not obligated to release admission test results to applicants, nor to elaborate beyond the initial written communication in the event applicants are unsuccessful in gaining admission.

Applicants must fully complete the application process to be considered for admissions, including submission of all required documents, and agree to the terms and conditions listed under the ‘Parent Admissions Agreement’ found within the application form which indicates their understanding of and agreement with the expectations of families at NIS. Applicants who are offered a place at NIS will be invited to proceed to registration and enrollment provided that all financial obligations are met, including any additional fees for student services provision.


Application Deadlines

NIS accepts applications at all times of the year, and students can enroll at any time, depending on availability, through grade 11.  Applications are not accepted for students intending to enroll in grade 12.  To complete the IB Diploma Programme, high school students must enroll no later than the beginning of grade 11 and must complete their last two full years at NIS.  For students entering the ELC preschool 3, applications are accepted as early as September 1 of the year prior to intended enrollment. 


Grade Placement

The age cut-off for NIS grade placement for all grades is September 1. Students are typically placed in the grade with their age level peers.  After the first weeks of a student’s placement, the placement is reviewed to confirm the appropriateness for the student academically, socially, and emotionally.

Provisional Acceptance

Provisional Acceptance (pending an interview) may be considered (if space is available) for applicants applying from outside Japan, waiving the need for an interview prior to granting official admission. Provisional Acceptance may be considered under the following conditions if the applicant:

  • is an “English Speaking Student”
  • is relocating from a country where the predominant language is English, or attends an accredited, international school with a US-based or IBO curriculum.
  • is transferring from a school in which English is the medium of instruction.
  • provides three years of school records with no indication of academic concerns or current standardized testing in the average to above average range.
  • has received no remedial instruction or special educational services.
  • has submitted all required documents.
  • has paid application fees and registration fee.

Students accepted under the terms of Provisional Acceptance will be guaranteed a spot in their class/grade, pending a final interview and payment of all remaining tuition and fees. In the case of Provisional Acceptance, both the Application Fee and Registration Fee are non-refundable, even if the student decides not to enroll. 


English Language Support (EAL)

To accommodate otherwise qualified applicants who may not have the appropriate level of English language proficiency, the NIS EAL Program (English as an Additional Language) provides two levels of support, either “Support” or “Intensive”.  There are no EAL support programs for students enrolled in the ELC Preschool or Kindergarten, and priority for admissions into NIS is given to students who have no other options locally.  Due to the nature of the IB Diploma Programme program at NIS, there is also no EAL support for students entering grade 11, and only limited support for students entering grades 9 or 10.  For the 2017-18 school year, placement in “Intensive” support requires an additional payment of 80,000 yen per quarter. Learning Challenges

We believe that each and every student is an individual with individual needs. To ensure students have the opportunity to succeed, we have developed a team of staff who work across the school divisions to provide support and guidance. However, while we try to be as inclusive as possible, due to the nature of the local community and the lack of availability of staff within and outside of our school community who can provide certain, specific areas of support in English, unfortunately we are not able to support ALL students with ALL needs.  Admissions into NIS requires parents to be honest and forthcoming with any and all information regarding the physical, emotional, social and academic development of their child. 


Progress Review

Continued attendance at NIS is dependent upon several factors, including academic progress, attitude, attendance and behavior. Satisfactory progress must be maintained in order to continue to be enrolled at NIS.  Admitted students are evaluated throughout the year, and, if satisfactory progress is not being maintained, the school may reconsider the initial placement and/or a student may be retained and not advance to the next grade the following school year.
