Grade 1 students continued to develop their understanding of 2D shapes. After learning about the attributes and properties of 2D shapes, they looked at tessellations. Tessellations use a variety of shapes to make a pattern. These shapes fit together without overlapping and has no gaps. The students observed some pictures of tessellations and realized that tessellations are all around them! A pineapple is a tessellation of rhombuses. A soccer ball is a tessellation of hexagons. The sidewalk can be made with tessellations of rectangles. They then conducted a tessellation test to see which 2D shapes would tessellate and fit together. The students concluded that circles cannot tessellate because they have curved sides. Then the students designed and made their own tessellations with 2D shapes.(1/29/2016)
