As a culmination to their study of nuclear and particle physics, the Gr. 12 students visited the National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) in Gifu prefecture (www.nifs.ac.jp). They saw the control room during live fusion tests being run in the institute's Large Helical Device (LHD), and were also able to visualize the paths of the charged particles in the interior of the helical device with the Numerical Simulator where a super computer generates a three-dimensional immersive virtual reality plasma simulation in real time. Another part of the tour included a collection of helical fusion research machines used to study fusion prior to the one currently being operated at this scientific research facility. An incredible opportunity to see high level physics in action!
