Modeling World Cup in Math Class
Posted 06/07/2018 03:00PM
Gr. 10 students discussed modeling techniques and simulated World Cup matches using a series of dice rolls and counter rolls. Teams are seeded as they are in the real world, with top seeds getting more rolls than lower ranked teams. Students drew teams at random and began the group round matches and the two teams/students who top their group proceeded to the second round and then to the knockout phase where extra time (2 extra rolls each) and penalties (highest roll shoot out) came into play. It was wonderful to see so many excited faces and students feeling the joy and passion that mathematics and mathematical modeling can bring. The NIS Mathematics Department wishes everyone a wonderful summer and an exciting World Cup; good luck to your respective countries!
